Swamp Kauri
Stumps
The Kauri being
the second largest tree in the world is surpassed in size only by the Canadian
Redwood. Incredibly these trees have always remained indigenous to the
top half of the North Island of New Zealand, but through conservation efforts
are successfully being introduced further south. The now protected giant,
which was once extensively logged, has a life span of up to 3,000
years and can exceed a height of 50 meter's. Once trees have fallen
the root structure remains beneath the earth, absorbing and preserving
elements present in the soil.
Gnarlywood selects
their Swamp Kauri from the Coromandel region of New Zealand due to the
influence of salt water, giving the wood a uniquely distinctive vibrant
colour. Carbon dating has proven that some of these root systems are up
to 40 thousand years old.
