Some of the pieces are made into conventional shapes, but the most interesting and eye catching pieces are those which have the gnarled and twisted lines of the bark and root systems of the ancient kauri trees.

These majestic kauri trees (Agathis Australis) were preserved by the lack of oxygen below the earth. This causes the wood to form it’s unique colour due to acids and minerals found in the surrounding soil. The wood is then known as Swamp Kauri. 

All pieces produced at Gnarlywood are either fully sealed with epoxy resin, to protect and enhance the natural beauty of the wood, or oiled with the finest quality food grade oil, for a natural wood finish.
